Metal Oxide Thin Films for Room-Temperature Gas Sensing and Electrochromic Devices
This community develops thin-film sensors and electrochromic devices using metal oxide semiconductors to detect specific gases at room temperature.
The work centers on synthesizing and characterizing thin films of tungsten oxide, zinc oxide, tin oxide, and nickel oxide, often combined with graphene or reduced graphene oxide. These materials are engineered for chemiresistive detection of nitrogen dioxide, hydrogen, ammonia, and hydrogen sulfide, with a strong focus on achieving high sensitivity and selectivity without external heating. A secondary strand involves electrochromic devices, where similar oxide films change color in response to electrical signals. The research frequently explores the role of oxygen vacancies and surface defects in enhancing sensor performance.
The largest share of the community's output is found in tungsten research, accounting for 8.2% of all tungsten research, with 2,932 papers here. Zinc and tin also contribute significantly, representing 1.6% and 3.4% of their respective element research, with 1,394 and 973 papers.
The community comprises 12,377 papers, published primarily in Sensors and Actuators B: Chemical, Journal of Alloys and Compounds, and Applied Surface Science.
Recent work continues to focus on integrating these oxide sensors into flexible and wireless systems, including MEMS devices and smart textiles for monitoring environmental gases and biological markers.
