Fluoride-Ion Batteries and Fluorinated Carbon Materials
This research community develops high-energy-density battery chemistries centered on fluoride ions and fluorinated carbon structures, alongside the synthesis of fluorinated graphene for composite applications.
The work focuses on the design of cathode materials, particularly metal fluorides like iron and cobalt, and fluorinated carbon anodes for primary and rechargeable lithium, sodium, and potassium batteries. Key methods include direct fluorination, solid-state synthesis of electrolytes, and the engineering of solid solutions to improve ionic conductivity. The community also investigates the fundamental electrochemical mechanisms of fluoride shuttling and the structural stability of fluorinated graphene nanosheets. Applications range from high-energy-density storage for electric transportation to thermal batteries and electromagnetic interference shielding.
The largest share of the community's output is found in fluorine research, accounting for 1.5% of all tracked fluorine papers, with 2,737 papers in this group. Carbon research follows with 1,335 papers, representing 0.2% of carbon research, while lithium research contributes 721 papers, or 0.3% of its total.
The community comprises 4,851 papers, publishing primarily in the Journal of Fluorine Chemistry, Carbon, and the Journal of Power Sources.
Recent work continues to refine all-solid-state fluoride-ion battery architectures, including the development of polymer electrolytes and pouch cells, and the stabilization of low-temperature lithium-fluoride conversion batteries. Studies also explore the use of fluorinated graphene oxide to enhance the mechanical properties of aramid fibers and the application of cobalt fluoride in thermal battery cathodes.
