Room-Temperature Chemiresistive Gas and Humidity Sensors
This community develops materials and devices that detect specific gases and humidity levels at room temperature, primarily for environmental monitoring, industrial safety, and health diagnostics.
The work centers on chemiresistive sensing, where the electrical resistance of a material changes upon contact with a target gas. Recurring materials include tin oxide (SnO2), zinc oxide (ZnO), and graphene oxide, often synthesized as nanoparticles or thin films. The primary targets are nitrogen dioxide (NO2), hydrogen, ammonia, and volatile organic compounds. A significant portion of the research focuses on enhancing sensitivity and selectivity through doping, heterostructure formation, and the integration of noble metals. Humidity sensing is a distinct but related strand, utilizing similar material platforms to measure water vapor concentration.
The largest share of the community's output is found in tin research, accounting for 4.4% of all tin research tracked, with 6,733 papers in this group. Hydrogen research follows with 5,697 papers, representing 1.1% of all hydrogen research.
There are 26,054 papers in this community, published most frequently in Sensors and Actuators B: Chemical, Applied Surface Science, and Journal of Alloys and Compounds.
Recent work continues to focus on two-dimensional materials such as transition metal dichalcogenides and MXenes for gas detection, as well as flexible and wearable sensor architectures for humidity monitoring.
